Houses aren't set in stone. If you renamed a team mid-year, want to change a color, or need to rearrange who's in which house, everything can be edited at any time.
👤 Who can do this: Admins and Site Leaders only.
Getting to the Houses page
Click House Points > Houses in the left sidebar. You'll see a card for each house with its name, color, and student count.
There are two kinds of edits you can make from here:
Things you do from the Houses page itself: importing student assignments in bulk, downloading rosters, and downloading welcome letters.
Things you do from an individual house screen: renaming, recoloring, changing who's in it, or deleting it. Click any house tile to open its detail page.
Bulk actions from the toolbar
The toolbar at the top of the Houses page has two buttons that work on lots of students at once: Import and Download.
Import a list of students
If you have more than a handful of students to move between houses, importing a spreadsheet is way faster than editing them one by one.
Click Import in the toolbar. You'll see two options side by side: Download Template and Upload.
Click Download Template first. We'll generate a spreadsheet of every student in your school, pre-filled with their current house assignment.
Open the file and update the House column for any students you want to move. Leave rows alone if a student should stay where they are.
Save the file (as
.csv,.xlsx, or.xls) and drag it into the Upload area.Review the preview, then confirm. We'll flag any rows that don't match a known student or house so you can fix them before applying changes.
For the full walkthrough, including how the file is parsed and how to handle warnings, see Uploading a new House List.
⚠️ Heads up: The importer only works for students who are already in LiveSchool. Adding a new student row to the spreadsheet won't create that student - they'll just show up as "not found" when you upload. To add a brand-new student to your school, do that first through your normal student management process, then come back and import them into a house.
Download a spreadsheet of house assignments
Want to see who's in which house at a glance, or hand off a list to another admin? Click Download > Spreadsheet. You'll get a spreadsheet with every student, their grade, and their current house assignment.
This is also the easiest way to grab a starting point for a bulk import — download, edit the House column, and re-upload.
Download welcome letters
Welcome letters are pre-filled, printable letters that announce each student's house - perfect for handing out at the start of the year or sending home with families.
Click Download > Welcome Letters to generate them. You can print, email, or share digitally from there.
Editing an individual house
For changes to a specific house, its name, color, students, or whether it exists at all, click the house's tile from the Houses page to open its detail page.
Renaming a house
Click in the House Name field, delete the current name, and type the new one. The change saves automatically as soon as you click away.
House names have to be unique. If you pick one that's already in use, you'll see an error.
Changing a house's color
Find the Color row on the detail page. It shows the current color name (like "Green" or "Blue") and a pencil icon on the right. Click anywhere in the box to open the color picker.
Pick from the palette (Green, Blue, Red, Gold, Purple, and more) or define your own custom color. The change saves the moment you choose it, and updates everywhere that house color appears: Overview, Competition Dashboard, and student profiles.
Changing who's in a house
There are two ways to change who's in a house: edit individual students, or change which rosters feed into the house entirely.
Moving, removing, or adding individual students
Scroll down to the Students table at the bottom of the house detail page. Each row has a Move button (to send a student to a different house) and a Remove button (to take them out entirely). At the top of the table, Add Student lets you bring new students in.
How those buttons behave depends on the rosters connected to the house:
House-specific rosters (created by Sort for Me or CSV import). Move and Remove work cleanly — those rosters exist only for House Points, so changes don't affect anything outside the competition.
Existing rosters you use elsewhere. Moving or removing a student changes the underlying roster too. So if a house pulls from a "Drama Club" roster, removing a student from the house also removes them from Drama Club. If that's not what you want, change the connected rosters instead (see below).
Grade rosters (like "9th Grade"). Move, Remove, and Add Student are disabled. Students in grade rosters are managed automatically based on their grade level. To shuffle students, change which grade rosters feed into each house.
Changing the connected rosters
If you want to swap out an entire roster, like replacing one feeder roster with a different one:
In the Connected Rosters section near the top of the detail page, click + Add Roster to add a new one, or click the × on a roster pill to remove one.
The change saves automatically.
💡 Tip: For one or two student moves, the Students table is usually fastest. For dozens of changes at once, use Import button on the Houses page (see Import section above).
